I'm Finally Cleaning Out All This Stuff. Does Anyone in the Family Want It?
You've been meaning to clean out the garage, attic, basement, shed, workshop, or storage unit for years. Now you're finally ready to tackle it.
There are boxes you haven't opened in ages, tools you no longer use, old collections, furniture, and things you've almost forgotten you own.
But just because you haven't used something in years doesn't mean it has no value, or that someone in your family wouldn't like to have it.
Before you sell, donate, or throw everything away, why not give family members a chance to see what's there and tell you what they'd like to keep?
With Legacy Treasure Chest (LTC), you can quickly find out what you have, what it might be worth, and share selected belongings with family members without organizing a family meeting or creating a shared online inventory.
1. Start with the Belongings Worth a Closer Look
You don't need to inventory everything.
Set aside the obvious donations and disposals. Then choose ten belongings that might have resale value or interest someone in your family.
Perhaps it's an old camera, woodworking tools, a collection of figurines, or china that's been packed away for years.
Take photos with your iPhone or iPad, one item per photo. Then use Add with Photos in LTC to select them and review the suggested information.
LTC's AI can help identify the belongings and provide preliminary resale-value estimates when enough information is available. These aren't appraisals and may be inaccurate or unavailable.
The goal is to quickly understand what you've been storing so you can decide what to offer family members and what to do with the rest.
2. Give Family Members a Chance to Speak Up
Once you've identified the belongings, select those you think family members might want.
In LTC, you can put them into a Set, such as "Family Favorites," and prepare a Beneficiary Packet for each person.
The packet contains a PDF with photographs, item names, preliminary estimated values, and available story information. It's delivered as a ZIP file that you can share through email, Messages, or other iOS sharing options.
You might send a simple message:
"I've been cleaning out the storage unit and found some things you might want. Take a look and let me know if anything interests you before I find another home for it. It's also perfectly fine if you don't want anything."
Each person can review the belongings and reply to you privately.
No one needs an LTC account, and there's no shared online inventory where everyone can see one another's responses.
One person controls what gets shared, who receives it, and how the responses are handled.
3. Find Out What People Actually Want
You might be surprised.
Your nephew may appreciate the woodworking tools you've had stored for twenty years. Your daughter may want a serving bowl because she remembers family dinners. And nobody may want the dining-room furniture you thought was worth keeping.
That's useful information.
Family members can express interest without asking directly for your possessions in front of everyone else.
You collect the responses through ordinary emails, messages, or conversations. LTC doesn't automatically collect preferences or notify family members.
If two people want the same item, you can discuss it privately and decide what makes sense. Expressing interest doesn't automatically mean someone has been promised the belonging.
For large or fragile items, you'll also need to consider the practicalities. Someone might appreciate a china service but decide that packing and shipping it across the country isn't worthwhile.
4. Make the Decisions and Finish the Cleanout
Once you've heard from everyone, you can record the final intended recipients in LTC.
For belongings nobody wants, LTC can help you consider selling, consignment, donation, or other disposition options. It can recommend an approach or identify additional information needed, and suggest practical next steps.
You'll still need to arrange pickups, shipping, sales, or donations yourself.
The point is to give family members a reasonable opportunity to express interest, make your decisions, and finally get those belongings out of storage.
Try It with Ten Belongings
Pick ten things from the garage, attic, basement, or storage unit you've been meaning to clean out.
Photograph them, select the pictures in LTC using Add with Photos, and see what you can learn about them.
Then put the belongings you want to offer to family into a Set and prepare information to share privately.
You may discover that someone wants something you've forgotten about, or that everyone is happy for you to let it go.
The first 25 cataloged items are free, so you can try Legacy Treasure Chest before deciding whether you need Full Catalog Access.
